Koh Talu marine life
Here are a few pics I took around Talu while snorkeling/free diving recently:
Dusted off the scuba kit this weekend and went for a couple of dives with the Coral Resort. Here are a few more shots ...
The visibility was very low (3-4 meters) as it had been raining a couple of days before so taking photos without a decent light or strobes was not easy.
Would recommend the Coral Resort for diving for a few reasons:
1) Their boat is fast - it gets to the island in 15 minutes flat.
2) Their resident divemaster is very knowledgeable on marine life and the area.
3) There isn't really much alternative in BS at the moment.

Coral seem to have hiked their prices up again, two dives now cost 2,570 baht (more than in Phuket). Still with no alternatives in the area I had to go ...

The vizibility was around 8-10 meters at Koh Sang, a little less at Koh Talu - water temperature was 31 degrees.

- There were a few nudibranchs around Koh Sang though none at Talu

Due to the volume of tourist boats and the fact that tour operators do not teach snorkellers not to stand on the reef a lot of the coral at Koh Talu has been destroyed. The coral is healthier round the northern headland slightly deeper - out of the reach of the tourists and their rubbish which invariably ends up in the ocean. Local fishing boats are also a scourge, all kinds of waste ends up going overboard.

That does seem a high price. In Mexico a nice two tank dive is 60 usd comes with fruit and sodas or water.

The best way to dive is to rent the tanks from the Coral then find your own boat - of course the more of you there are in the group the cheaper it gets. The Coral charge a flat rate per person, it even costs 1,800 baht to snorkel so I wouldn't recommend them anymore.

That is expensive. Although we had a very good experience with the Coral during our April wedding (put my immediate family up there - all the other riffraff were in the cheap places around) it truly is on the expensive side, seemingly in all areas.
Those are excellent pictures! I've only been snorkeling once out around Koh Talu and while fun, it wasn't all that varied or interesting in terms of what was on display. Your pictures make it look far more so. Very cool.
Inspires me to give it another shot sometime. Suppose I must do my open water and finally get out of the snorkel and into the tank/suit.

You can rent the scuba tanks from the Coral for a couple of hundred baht then go out on the fishing boat, this will be far better value than what the Coral are charging.

As BS grows hopefully competition will bring reasonable dive prices, but your idea of fishing boats is good. Used to go to Costa Rica and Honduras and we could always snag a boat from a fisherman or friend. Very nice and interesting pics on Koh Thalu marine life !
I had this pleasure to dive in here, and I saw so many life in january 2007 when the water was clear on this only point between Ban Saphan and Ban Krut.
I have some questions about venomous animals in this part of Siam gulf.
As I got (in ban Krut sea) itches on my knees and elbows after a dive in contact with corals (recovered by cortisone applications) I decided to dive with an integral wet suit next time.(1.5mm)
And bye the bye, it can be a perfect solution for this kind of contact and even with jellyfishes potentially fatal.
But.....are there some so dangerous marine species in here.....wich one ? Sharks?
cones? Manta ray ? jellyfish, wich kind ?........?
Is someone have experience about that ?
Still in France for work I expect and believe to be able, this year, to come to build my home in Ban krut this year.
