Montri's Coco Bar: the end of an era?
Montri's Coco Bar: the end of an era?
Was a little disheartened to see that the new owners of Montri's plot have levelled the place, bungalows, house, trees the lot - it looks like a tsunami has gone through there.
It seems they have big plans for it, Montri has some nice drawings of a new bar, swanky bathrooms and the like. The old bar is the only thing left now though there are plans to move it a couple of meters closer to the ocean.
So what do we think? Personally I don't think a concrete jungle or building site will have the same appeal and that what we had in Montri's rustic little meeting point could be on the verge of disappearing all together.

Dear Coco Bar Fan
I understand all of your concerns about the construction that going on. The main reason rebuild the Coco Bar instead of renovate the old one because the wooden sturcture of Coco Bar built by Montri over 10 years ago was too old and damaged. If I decided to renovate then Montri has to close Bar 1-2 month. The project will be under Montri's supervisory to make sure that all spirit and soul of Coco Bar is remain the same. Beside the bar there will be a new clean rest room for convenience to all fan, all the contruction will not be too much disrupt to asmosphere of Coco Bar. New Mediterranean look bungalow will be built to replace the old house and bungalow there in ther next 3 months. Most of the tree will preserved and grow more later on.
Thank you for you comments and concerns
Joe

Looks like they've started on the new bar already, here are a couple of shots from the weekend.
If you want a drink before the old one is gone get down there quick. Any time frame Joe, when can we expect the new bar to be operational? What are your plans for the rest of the area?

Re: Montri's Coco Bar: the end of an era?
Hi all,
Glad to see some progress of the construction as Montri keep complaining builder "Yoi" is quite slow and he wants to see new bar finish ASAP. Hopefully we will see new bar finish by October. Some of the wood from old bar will be moved over at the final state before we will tear down the old one. I'll try to go sometime be end of this month to join you there. Talking to Montree about celebration when we will tear it down and when Montree will open new one (but look old) May be happy hours and free beer ?

What are the plans for the rest of the area? Bungalows? Restaurant? Resort?
Re: Montri's Coco Bar: the end of an era?
Tear down the old Montri Bar. Sob, sob. A National Day Of Mourning. Black armbands....Well, I guess I'll get over it. (I've spent many fine hours at that old wooden bar. Great times, and one of the best men in the world that ever stood behind a bar)

The old one is still there at the moment ... but it won't be long now ...
Re: Montri's Coco Bar: the end of an era?
Work on the new bar seems to have slowed up considerably in the last couple of weeks!
Still may get New Year in the old one!

You doing ok .Took our village in Chiang Mai 13 weeks to replace about a dozen tiles in the swimming pool.Of course they emptied the pool and then found out the tiles were no longer available . After weeks of searching they went for another colour. Took 2 men 3 days to lay 12 tiles We will be down in early November but will be quite happy to drink at the old one !

Test drove the new bar over the weekend - its lost the rustic appeal but is much better closer to the beach:
Looks like a huge apartment is going in there also ...
