Re: Greenpeace: fishing boats destroying Gulf of Thailand
It's all about making the quick buck and ignoring the long term catastrophy. Same with climate change. The US won't sign Kyoto because "it's bad for the economy", by which they mean large corporate interests. Short term thinking has always been with us, but today the impact is so universal that it's...

Re: Bangsapan building boom
BS has reached a "tipping point". Popularity and development will accelerate much faster now. Every few years will bring major changes: new people, new ambience. The Thais will accomodate as usual, with swank bars, hotels, restaurants, burger joints, luxury spas, air-con coffee shops, and adult ente...

>>Its all very well everyone and his dog building more rental bungalows I wish the dogs would build more beach bars as well, for themselves, and go *there* at night, rather than turning themselves into allergy shag rugs at Montris or Why Not. Time for a tax based on the number of legs you're coming ...

Re: Immigration raids in Bangsahpan
There's a guesthouse right around the corner from where I stay in Bangkok, that gets raided all the time. The guesthouse doesn't check passports and various criminals types hang out there. It's cheap, too. Perhaps it's run by the police.

Bang Saphan is growing up quickly. It brings back sentimental memories of summer nights in Boston, and gunshots late at night in the alley behind my apartment.

Kind of makes you proud, doesn't it? Little Bang Saphan shows the Big Boys how it's done.

Re: Dogs on the Beach
Kill them only if they get within 50 feet of a bar.... One side of this issue nobody seems to cares about is ASTHMA. I'm allergic to animals (I've nearly died a few times in childhood), but people bring their dogs to the Why Not and Montris, where the dogs pretend they're hearth rugs, spread out und...

>>..as I have said many times before ...regardless of the business you choose you will only make as much as the thais think you should before something changes Yeah, a different set of rules apply when you're in business here. On the other hand, just living here is quite a good deal, eg: the public ...

Re: Bangsaphan's busiest high season
BS is becoming a tourist town, and changing in ways that are ugly to those who know and love it from the past. More noise, cars, houses, overrun bars, and probably crime. Nothing can be done: the word is out. Soon there will be an almost entirely German and Swedish speaking Montri Bar, with a valet ...

New York Times: How Taksin rules from afar.
Officially, his sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, is the prime minister (he nominated her for the job in 2011). But from his homes in Dubai and London, from the gold mines he owns in Africa and during regular visits to nearby Asian countries, Mr. Thaksin, 63, has harnessed the Internet and mobile technol...

Re: Look how weird the tides are here....
But, the strange thing to me was the fact that some days there are two small tides, some days a big one and a small one, and on some days just one big one. Also, on days when there are two tides, the differences between high and low are very small: about 4 or 5x smaller than on single tide days. But...
